Earlier this year the Australian Government made one of the most significant infrastructure decisions in this country’s history. This includes investing with the private sector to build a high-speed fibre-to-the-premises broadband network connecting 90 per cent of homes and businesses - and deploying next-generation wireless and satellite to service the remaining 10 per cent. As we have reported previously, Council has undertaken a public private partnership to build our own fibre network to support our business, education and health sectors. Council proactively took the step to become a member of the Asia Pacific Fibre to the Home (FTTH) Council as part of this project. The FTTH Council approached council’s Principal Economic Development Officer-Telecommunications, Michael Whereat to present at the 4th annual conference held in Melbourne in May. With over 500 delegates in attendance Council were excited to be part of bringing the best of the industry together for this annual event. In light of the Australian government's planned investment in a new open-access National Broadband Network, it was an opportune time for us to present on the success of the Connecting the Coast project to prominent international guests and leading companies who also showcased their expertise, technology, products and services that are shaping the future of the industry.
The Tax Office has announced new measures to help businesses with an annual turnover of less than $2 million that are struggling to manage their tax debts in the current economic climate. Small businesses can arrange twelve month general interest charge (GIC) free payment arrangements and deferring the payment date for activity statements. Businesses need to contact the ATO as early as possible on 13 11 42 to discuss their circumstances so that a sustainable interest free payment arrangement can be negotiated. The Tax Office is also offering small businesses with temporary cash flow problems the opportunity to defer the payment date for their activity statement liabilities for up to two months. Visit the ATO website for more information.
The Management Excellence Awards recognise the managers who lead and inspire Australian business - the leaders among us who turn belief and passion into viable, sustainable businesses. These managers work in private and public companies or are business owners who have built their own successful organisations. They live and work in cities, towns and remote communities and are the men and women who inspire us day to day in the workplace. The Management Excellence Awards are one of the few awards that recognise the individual manager's excellence in management and leadership and celebrate and acknowledge their achievements. The Awards provide managers with the opportunity to reflect on their success and to take time out to consider their own personal and professional development. Being nominated for these Awards is, in itself, an amazing boost. To know that others see and appreciate the endless hours of commitment is an energising and motivational reward bringing about long-term business, personal and community benefits.
