Sunshine Coast Regional Council eNews

 September 2009

In this month's edition:

Our Sunshine Coast - it's too good to waste

Did you know commercial and industrial waste accounts for over a third of rubbish that ends up in landfill? More importantly, were you aware that Sunshine Coast landfills are set to reach capacity by 2014? That’s less than five years away.

Waste management may not be your core business, but everyone has a role to play in reducing the amount of waste we produce on the Sunshine Coast.

After months of hard work and research, council’s Regional Waste Strategy Taskforce has completed a discussion paper outlining recommendations for waste reduction and improved waste management on the Sunshine Coast - and now it’s time to have your say.

The ideas and suggestions put forward in the discussion paper impact all of us - residents, business owners, tourism operators, schools and industry. Your opinion is a vital part of the equation in working towards our goal of reducing our waste to landfill to zero by 2020.

One of the recommendations includes working closely with local business to help reduce commercial waste by 70% before 2015.

To have your say, simply fill out council's quick survey online or pick up a copy from one of Council’s Customer Service Centres and go into the draw to win one of 10 ‘Home Recycling Kits’ including a worm farm and compost bin.

Your feedback will help inform a final Waste Reduction Strategy for the Sunshine Coast. Submissions close Wednesday 30 September 2009. The Waste Reduction Strategy will then be considered by council later in the year.

Sunshine Coast managers to be celebrated at awards finals

Michael Groom overcame serious physical and mental setbacks to reach his goals - conquering the five highest mountains in the world without the assistance of bottled oxygen, and all but one he climbed without the front third of both feet.

Now he shares his experiences to motivate soldiers going off to war, athletes struggling to come back from serious injury, and professionals who are keen to get a little closer to the truth of ‘no pain, no gain’.

Be inspried by Michael's story of pushing boundaries, asking more of yourself, and achieving excellence in every sense of the word at the 2009 Sunshine Coast Management Excellence Awards Final.

This exclusive dinner is the perfect opportunity to network and rub shoulders with the Sunshine Coast’s hottest management talent in celebration of the Professional, Owner, Rural/Remote and Young Managers of the Year.
