Council starts writing new planning scheme

New-planning-scheme.jpg

Writing of council’s new Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme is set to commence in late April, taking the Coast another step closer to a unified, whole-of-region approach to land use planning.

In readiness, council will visit towns across the Coast from March to speak with residents and learn more about how they would like their town, suburb or village to look in the future.

Keep your eye on council’s website for a copy of the submission report and details of the upcoming community consultation.

Encompass - have you got yours?

Council is currently delivering the latest issue of Encompass to all households across the Sunshine Coast.

The March issue introduces the Sunshine Coast’s 2010 Australia Day Award recipients.  Celebrating the contribution of these individuals, community organisations and businesses in the region, Mayor Bob Abbot presented the awards at a twilight ceremony at Mooloolaba Beach on 25 January.

Other stories include council’s strategis to reduce the region’s landfill waste by 70 per cent, an introduction to Unitywater—the region’s new water supplier, feedback from the Our place Our future community engagement program, green changes at the Sunshine Coast Airport and much more.

Enjoy reading the latest Encompass

If you haven’t received your copy by 8 March, phone council on 5475 7272 or pick one up at your local council office or library.

Cultural Plan for creative communities

What makes the Sunshine Coast so creative? Why are we a hub for artists, festivals and markets full of locally-made products?

Sunshine Coast Council is about to find out—and we want to hear from you.

Council is undertaking its first cultural planning process for the region. Your feedback will help guide the development and delivery of cultural planning, programs, services and facilities for our region over the next five years.

The plan, known as Creative Communities Sunshine Coast 2010-2015, will outline a shared vision of how communities in the region wish to experience and express their culture.

Council unleashes dog registration blitz

Dog owners can avoid a $200 on-the-spot fine by keeping their dog’s registration up to date.

Council is cracking down on unregistered dogs after nearly 25 per cent of Sunshine Coast dog owners failed to re-register their pets this year.

As registration is compulsory under state government laws, council officers will be door knocking in every suburb checking for unregistered dogs.

Council’s priority is to reunite lost dogs with their owners, but dogs that are not registered cannot be easily identified.

Council endeavours to make registration affordable by offering lower fees to responsible owners who de-sex and microchip their dogs.

Council issues dog owners with a registration renewal notice each year.

Beerwah to Landsborough bus service

glasshouse-bus.jpg

A new trial bus service—the first Sunshine Coast Council Public Transport Levy initiative for the hinterland—has started.

The new service connects Beerwah and Landsborough and introduces weekend services between Landsborough and Maleny.

Timetables are available at Beerwah and Maleny libraries and regular commuters between Maleny and Landsborough should check for timetable changes.

A well-used public transport network is vital to achieving our vision for a sustainable Sunshine Coast. Hinterland residents are encouraged to ‘bus-it’ as often as possible to help the service succeed and support sustainable living on the Sunshine Coast.

The new bus service is a joint initiative of Sunshine Coast Regional Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Telephone Glasshouse Country Coaches on 5496 9249 for details about the service and copies of timetables.

Creating a sense of place at the Junction

Noosa Junction

The Noosa Junction is another step closer to an exciting and vibrant new look with the appointment of the locally-based Place Design Group to develop a Place Making Master Plan for Noosa’s much-loved shopping strip.

The appointment marks the first stage in the project to rejuvenate the Junction, making it an easier and more attractive place to visit and do business.

The Noosa Junction Place Making Master Plan will focus on town planning, urban design, traffic and landscaping—building on already completed economic strategy work .

Council is now talking to all stakeholders to get their thoughts.  Community members are encouraged to come to Arcadia Walk on Saturday 13 March and add their ideas.

The Plan will look at things like signage and way-finding, linkages to key nodes such as Arcadia Street, the future Transit Centre, cinema, shopping centres, The ‘J’ and Pinnaroo Park.   It also aims to enhance the natural ‘greenness’ that sets Noosa Junction apart from other Sunshine Coast centres.

For Place Making Master Plan announcements and up-dates visit council’s website or contact council's Place Coordinator on (07) 5449 5310.

Art Prize entries close soon

Council’s Sunshine Coast Art Prize is attracting diverse entries from across the nation.

The coveted prize for the winning two-dimensional artwork is $15,000 plus a four-week residency in the Sunshine Coast hinterland valued at $5,000.

The final 40 entries will be hung at the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery, with the winning work acquired by the gallery.

Last year’s winner was Peter Hudson with Law, oil on linen, 150 x 145cm.

'Increasingly, the divide between natural law and the human world widens. Sadly, modern humans are losing their consciousness and their connection to homeland. The painting ‘Law’ is a reminder of scale, power, beauty, deep mystery and living in hope that all will be ok'.

Entries into the 2010 Sunshine Coast Art Prize close on 31 March.

Celebrate Bike Week

Calling all cyclists. Council’s TravelSmart team is hosting a range of great events and workshops to celebrate Bike Week from March 13 to 21.

There is something for all ages, from bike maintenance workshops and pathway awareness rides, to sessions helping children progress from training wheels to two wheels as well as how to correctly fit your bike helmet.

Local schools are also encouraged to get involved in a Ride to School Day on March 17.

Bike Week aims to:

  • encourage and facilitate active participation in cycling
  • raise awareness in the broader community of the benefits of cycling
  • position cycling as a legitimate, active and healthy transport mode

The events are part of Queensland's Bike Week activities with funding from the Queensland Government and Bicycle Queensland. Several local bike shops have generously donated their time to conduct the bike maintenance workshops.

Make every day a litter free day

clean-up-pic-2.jpg

Council supports Clean up Australia Day and encourages residents and businesses to register or join a clean up site on March 7.

Simple actions can make a huge difference to our environment and, over the past 20 years, hundreds of thousands of Australians have joined together to help clean up our environment.

If you can’t make it along to one of the organised clean ups, do your bit by making every day a litter free day.

For more information or to register visit to www.cleanup.org.au.
