New Year's Eve

@ Mooloolabah

More Sunshine Coast events ...

 22 December, 2011

Hi

Council wishes you a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.

Over the Christmas and New Year holiday period council services — including regular waste collection and lifeguard patrols — will operate as usual but council offices and libraries will be closed on all public holidays.

The first edition of eNews for 2012 will be published on Thursday 2 February.

In this edition

Catch a free holiday bus

Free holiday buses

Dreading the holiday traffic and parking dilemmas? Hitch a ride on a FREE holiday bus and arrive at your destination stress-free and ready to have fun.

From 26 December to 8 January, all buses on the Sunshine Coast will be free in a move by council to bust congestion, free up parking and encourage sustainable travel. All Sunshine Coast TransLink Sunbus services, including the extra New Year's Eve services, Hinterland Connect, Flexilink, Maleny-Landsborough-Beerwah as well as Council Cabs  are free during this time.

And when you have helped to ease traffic congestion, free up parking and support sustainable travel by catching a Free Holiday Bus (and even if you didn’t … ) please let council know what you think of this program. Complete the online survey, accessible on council's website after 26 December, and you’ll be in the draw to win a $250 shopping voucher.

The FREE holiday bus initiative, funded by your Public Transport Levy aims to take cars off our busiest roads by providing an easy alternative for residents and visitors heading to the beach, shops or many of the other popular destinations along the routes.

The Whitlams and Amy Meredith for New Year's Eve Mooloolaba

New Year's Eve fireworks

Enjoy the Whitlams, Amy Meredith and a fabulous line-up of talent at council’s New Year’s Eve celebrations at Mooloolaba on Saturday 31 December.

New Year’s Eve at Mooloolaba starts at 4pm. There will be roving street entertainment, children’s activities, carnival rides and buskers along with delicious food from local vendors, restaurants and cafes on the Esplanade and two spectacular fireworks displays to ring in the New Year at 8.30pm and midnight.

Entry to this drug, alcohol and glass-free event is free and for patron safety, a number of roads will be closed in the vicinity of the event site.

New Year’s Eve at Mooloolaba is one of a number of New Year’s celebrations planned across the Sunshine Coast. Kings Beach and the Noosa Marina at Tewantin, will also host council supported events to mark the start of 2012.

Pet owners living near these venues are reminded that fireworks and amplified music can agitate and alarm animals and are asked to ensure their pets are safe and secure for the duration of the event.

Full program information and event details can be found on council’s website.

Do the right thing - dog-gone it!

Shared parks, shared beaches - socially responsible behaviour! That’s the message council is spreading as part of a community education and awareness campaign to bring responsible dog ownership sharply into focus on the Coast.

The campaign will also raise awareness about dog management regulations contained in council’s suite of new local laws to take effect from 1 January 2012.

The new dog laws are grounded in common sense and council is calling on the community to do the right thing, so that enforcement will only be necessary if dog owners are un-cooperative or if there is a risk to public safety or a legislative breach.

You can find information about responsible dog ownership including details about the animal management local laws on council’s website or grab a copy of the new responsible dog ownership brochure from your nearest customer contact centre, library, gallery, visitor information centre or council community centre.

As well as providing simple tips and guidance on how to be a responsible pet owner, the brochure features a regional map showing dog on- and off-leash areas and prohibited areas.

Brisbane Road upgrade begins

BNE_Rd_crop.jpg

Tuckers Creek Bridge will be the first section of Brisbane Road upgrade that will see the length of road between Culbara and Venning streets in Mooloolaba widened to four lanes.

Early construction work is planned to begin in January with Unity Water relocating water and sewer pipes near Tuckers Creek, followed soon after by Energex relocating the overhead power lines, clearing the way for the duplication of the bridge over Tuckers Creek and its road approaches.

The new bridge will be built on the eastern side of existing bridge, and will cater for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, with a shared footpath and a dedicated on-road cycle lane.

The road connections leading up to the bridge will also be improved with the installation of a temporary signalised intersection at Bindaree Crescent and the relocation of the existing pedestrian crossing.

As bridge construction works are located off the existing road, council expects minimal disruption to vehicle and traffic flow and only the occasional disruption to boating activities.

Follow the progress of the Brisbane Road Upgrade Project on council’s website.

Celebrate Australia Day at Kings Beach

Be part of council’s Australia Day community party at Kings Beach Amphitheatre, Caloundra on 26 January and celebrate Aussie-style.

From 10am to 5pm the free, family event will be bursting at the seams with live entertainment, workshops, activities and market stalls expressing the diversity that is an important part of the Australian national character.

The Australia Day Community Celebrations are a great way to celebrate safely and responsibly and will be an alcohol and glass free event.

Visit council’s website to find out more.
