One wheelturn closer to the S.S. Dicky’s final journey
Archaeologists will carry out another test excavation on the wreck of the S.S. Dicky to test specialist cutting equipment developed to remove the frames from this nautical relic. Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer said Council was ticking all the boxes to preserve key heritage elements of the S.S. Dicky wreck and reduce safety risks. The S.S.Dicky was driven ashore at Caloundra during poor weather in February 1893.

A taskforce formed by council, comprising representatives from Dicky Beach Surf Life Saving Club, community heritage representatives, State Government and council, have been working on a long term management strategy for the wreck and unanimously voted in favour of relocating the wreck. A relocation point for the wreck has been identified and discussed with the community in a section of open space in close proximity to both the Coastal Path and Dicky Beach car park. Council has allocated $180,000 towards relocating the remains of the structure, thus preserving the heritage values of the iconic wreck, and improving public safety at Dicky Beach. More...

Connecting Collections Networking Event
Recently a workshop was held at Pioneer Cottage Buderim with local heritage organisations to discuss the progress made from the Connecting Collections workshops held in 2014. Discussions included:

  • Round table discussion on what each group has been working on.
  • Content contributed and published on the SLQ John Oxley blog from the Sunshine Coast members of the Connected Collections project.
  • Update on digitisation equipment and conservation workshops.
  • Update on Bankfoot House Action plan for future collaboration between heritage organisations across the Sunshine Coast.
  • Use of Community Hub as a place to list local heritage events.

The Connecting Collections workshops were hosted by Cultural Heritage Services and The State Library of Queensland. The aim was to bring together the wider museum sector to discuss options for digitising and conserving the significant items held in our local museum collections. Heritage collections hold valuable primary material that tells the story of our communities of today. Examples include William Pettigrew’s diary, recording the growth of the timber industry, and the families and places that supported it. The journal of the explorer and pioneer William Landsborough – a work of national significance – is held in a local museum. Digital technologies open new opportunities for increased access and conservation of these important materials. Funded by the Cultural Heritage Levy, the project provides centralised digitisation equipment and leadership. The equipment will be housed at the new Bankfoot House Interpretive Centre, available to be booked by heritage groups. Council staff will coordinate outsourcing of frail and rare works.
