History Week 2016 - theme of 'Neighbours' |
|
|
|
History Week explores how individuals, families and communities have shaped our identity. This year Mona Vale Library will present a display showing the community driven campaign ‘Saving Currawong’. In 1999 the ‘Friends of Currawong’ group was formed to lead a strong campaign against inappropriate development on this unique site of historical significance. After 12 years the campaign resulted in a big success when the State Government purchased Currawong in 2011 and it became a State Park.

Children's Book Council of Australia - 2016 Book Awards |
|
|
|
Established in 1945, the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) is a not-for-profit, volunteer run organisation which aims to engage the community with literature for young Australians. The CBCA recently announced its picture book of the year –‘Flight’ by Nadia Wheatley and Armin Greder
Flight begins with a grim black landscape reminiscent of biblical tales. Powerful images lead the reader into a modern day horror story as a family flees persecution. Images of exhausted parents and children, loss and fear are shown. The illustrations stand alone, as a powerful political statement which is gut wrenching at the end, as a young boy and his family still wait for a solution to the refugee crisis.
Winner Reviewed by Robyn, Mona Vale Library storyteller.
And also reviewed by Robyn from the shortlisted titles (her personal favourite)! –
‘Perfect’ by Danny Parker and Freya Blackwood
With our ever present obsession with internet connectivity and screen time, it is refreshing to see and read this ‘perfect’ book. Childhood days spent in the company of siblings, mucking around with everyday things, exploring and discovering outdoor spaces, playing, caring and investigating together. Delightful pictures invite the reader to join in the fun.
Saftey – Togtherness – Family and Nature – an aptly named book!

The View Finder: what to borrow next? |
|
|
|
Top Picks – Crime drama available to borrow
True Detective (Season 1 and 2)
Each season is structured as a self-contained story following various sets of characters and settings. Great acting in what is likely to become a viewing obsession!
Happy Valley (Series 1 and 2)
Quality, well written British crime drama, filmed and set in the Calder Valley.
Fargo (Season 1 and 2)
A black comedy crime drama, inspired by the 1996 film of the same name. Each episode opens with the dubious yet tantalising claim that –
‘This is a true story. The events took place in Minnesota in (year). At the request of the survivors, the names have been changed. Out of respect for the dead, the rest has been told exactly as it occurred.’
Broadchurch (Series 1 and 2)
A British television crime drama set in a fictional close-knit small town. Great acting in this bona fide national obsession in the UK.
Hinterland
A police detective drama series set in Wales, and unique in showcasing dialogue in both English and Welsh.
The Fall (Series 1 and 2)
Literary tie in! – The title of this series is a reference to the line ‘Falls the Shadow’ from the poem ‘The Hollow Men’ by T.S Eliot.
Set in Northern Ireland and featuring great performances from Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan, reviews for The Fall have been overwhelmingly positive. |
