Library Vibe May 2016

[date-today]

Dear [subscriber-firstname]

Welcome to the May edition of the Library Vibe.

We have been busy over the past few weeks, keeping the kids busy during the school holidays and commemorating ANZAC Day amongst other things.

The holiday events were well attended and covered a range of activities including craft sessions, authors and a talk on whales and young tinkerers had fun participating in our robotics workshop.  We’ll be sure to have more fun activities scheduled for the July holidays.

In commemoration of Anzac Day we are hosting a small exhibition focusing on some of the Australian soldiers who served in WWI.  These soldiers were either born locally or moved to the Northern Beaches as returned servicemen.  If you haven’t had a chance to see it, there’s still time, take a stroll down the library ramp and view the exhibition.

This month is also a busy time for libraries with Library and Information Week being celebrated in the last week of May.  This national initiative gives libraries an opportunity to showcase their resources, facilities, events, contacts and services through different programs and events to the community.

This year sees the Library host its first ever Reading and Writing Festival as part of Library and Information Week; all the details about registering for the festival are included in this newsletter.

New to the Collection

We’ve added some new eBook and eAudio titles to our Borrowbox collection, these include:

The Husband’s Secret by Laine Moriarty (eBook)

At the heart of ‘The Husband’s Secret’ is a letter that’s never meant to be read. This is a gripping and thought provoking novel about the challenges of knowing our spouses – and, ultimately, ourselves.

And something to listen to (eAudio) ‘That Empty Feeling’ by Peter Corris

A retrospective novel transporting Sydney detective Cliff Hardy back to the 1980s. This is an entertaining story which gathers interest as Hardy untangles a conspiracy, meeting shady characters and violence along the way.

Borrow Me!

DVD ‘The Bridge – series three’

Saga Noren returns in series three of the Bridge and despite her furrowed brow, it is a great feeling to have the Malmo detective back. The Bridge is Nordic Noir at its visually stunning best and Saga is one of the most interesting female characters we have seen on television for a long time.

Series one and two of The Bridge are also available to borrow from Mona Vale Library.

‘Big Little Lies’ by Liane Moriarty, reviewed by Jackie, Resource Access Librarian

This is a gossipy book based on a Northern Beaches primary school community. The reader is drawn into characters and their stereotypical identities, which will resonate with them. The women in the book hold dark secrets, and as the story unfolds it covers the issue of domestic violence, step-families and shared parenting.

Big Little Lies highlights the powerful bond of female friendship but, also demonstrates that ‘all that glitters is not gold’ – with a death at a school trivia night!
