Planting for Peregian's future

As the little ones from Peregian Beach Community Kindy grow steadily in the years ahead, they can watch 100 trees they planted grow with them on the banks of the tiny creek across the road.

The spring-fed wetland is being cared-for by Veggie Village Community Gardens at Peregian Beach, and thanks to Noosa Council funding and Noosa Landcare hard work it's now free of the infestation of Singapore Daisy that had choked it until recently.

This month the kids from the local Peregian Beach Kindy finished the job, planting 100 trees along the tiny creek.

Lin Martin from Veggie Village said it was a great example of the Council and locals coming together to protect a tiny, precious pocket of wetland that was at the heart of Peregian's community recreation precinct.

Council ends cat registration

Noosa Council has voted to end cat registration in the shire, a move which is expected to be welcomed by pet owners.

Last year the State Government removed its mandatory requirement for cats to be registered and placed the responsibility with local governments under a local law.

Council last week considered a staff report that suggested cat registration provided little benefit to cat owners and was seen by the community as little more than an excuse for a council fee. Read more.

No more free "get out of jail cards" for Noosa Waters

Noosa boaties who sneak their way without a permit into the Noosa Waters residential lake system will no longer get out free of charge.

Noosa Council has decided it will start recovering its costs for callouts - many of them out of hours - to release boats from the lock.

Noosa Waters residents have raised the issue of non card-holders sneaking into the lake system behind authorised boats.

When the unauthorised boaties want to get out it means a callout by a contractor or council officers to operate the lock, with the general ratepayers of Noosa footing the bill.

After discussions with the Noosa Waters Residents Association, Council has agreed to erect signs at the lock warning those who enter without a card that a release fee of $400 will apply.

The Residents Association agreed this was the right approach, and the Council has determined that clearly visible signs warning of the release fee should act as a deterrent.

A piece of Tewantin history on the move

Tait Duke Cottage, an important link to Tewantin's past, now has a new home and a secure future. Noosa Council has agreed to move the old cottage from its temporary home in Wallace Park to a permanent resting place on Council-owned land in Earl Street, Tewantin.

Along with a new location, the historic cottage will have a new role as a 'one stop shop' for local community support information.

It will be jointly occupied by United Synergies and the Rotary Club of Noosa Heads, allowing it to become an important part of the community as it was intended. Read more
