The September e-news for entrepreneurial adventurous women

Dear [subscriber-firstname]

Boys with footballs making loads of money, always in the media, sometimes taking drugs. Girls in sport struggling to be seen and struggling to make a living. Glass ceilings in the workplace may have been smashed - see Dr Peter White's comments below for a welcome male viewpoint - but there's still a long way to go in the world of sport.

More 'Girls Who've Got IT' below, and a great exercise when faced with a difficult decision.

The eco-friendly September issue of Honestly Woman will be out next week with the 4-page report on paper and print technologies that enable more eco-friendly choices when ordering print jobs. When you combine issues of economy with available eco-options, sometimes something has to be comprimised, and it can be a difficult choice. Hmmm, maybe I should have applied the four NLP questions myself.

Bev Ryan, Editor

She's Got It!

Well, this month it's actually "They've Got it!": five Aussie women who want to make a difference, in their late 20s and early 30s all met in Tanzania, East Africa in 2003, while volunteering at different schools. When their volunteering roles came to an end, they headed home to their various Aussie states and then realised they all wanted to continue to help the kids they loved back in Africa.

Out of that has come FoodWaterShelter which aims to build an eco-friendly children's village on three acres of land in a village outside of Arusha, in northern Tanzania, East Africa that will become home to 40 local children that have been orphaned. This children's village will also offer early learning programs that prepare children for successful social and educational interaction.

Rebecka Delforce is now president of Food Water Shelter (fws) and back in Tanzania, Kelsey Wilson is Vice-President , Anne O'Donoghue is Treasurer, Edwina Hammond is their negotiator based in Tanzania, and Shona Arneil is Secretary.

Read the fascinating blogs that give you a peek at what is underway right now in Africa - plans that were originally hatched by these five women and their friends here in Oz. You might like to support them or get involved yourself.

Tell us why you or a woman you know has 'Got it!' & include a crisp 300dpi image & website link (200 words max)

TOP TIP:

from Sonya Yeh Spencer, Certified Advance NLP Coach

A client came to me because she could not decide if she should start her own business and leave the family business that her father wants her to take over one day. She had been struggling with making a decision, and was feeling extremely stressed, guilty and full of self doubt. One of the exercises I took her through got her to think of her dilemma from a very different perspective. Here are the questions that I asked her - use them yourself when making a difficult decision:

1. What will happen if I do this? 2. What will happen if I don't do this? 3. What won't happen if I do this? 4. What won't happen if I don't do this?

These questions are powerful because they shift our neurology and examine an issue, very quickly, from a different perspective. At the same time they uncover what we believe, what we truly want, and our underlining values.

GLASS CEILING

The "glass ceiling" is behind us. Too often it is a term used by "social commentators" to keep their own comments (and advice) alive. In other instances it is used by women who should be smart enough to know better.

As a result of the perceived glass ceiling men are actively discriminated against. I base this observation on my experience in the Queensland Public Service and my observations of other public agencies in Australia. On two occasions I have been discriminated against and on several occasions I have been asked to rethink my recommendation for a male recruit so that I could "get the female numbers up" - generally by some male supervisor who was more worried about his numbers than his ability to deliver a task.

The "powers that be" in the public service have invoked the rule of a quota system for the minimum numbers of females. We were always assessed on our levels for women in management, and low levels were seen as a rallying point for action. I used to be assessed for my levels and I always came in above the level. I was told "Well done!" and I had the good grace to blush with pride. I was then asked, for the benefit of the others in the Executive, what was my program.

I told them the answer was simple: "Employ the best applicant."

There is no doubt in my experience of the value of female employees. Their insightfulness, intuition and creativity are generally superb. Some male managers have not realised the value of women and so discriminate against them. These managers should be removed as soon as possible. However, I have also observed that some female managers discriminate against women - they do not want the potential competition!

In this century with flexible working hours, intelligently managed maternity issues, and hopefully fathers taking the load off some of the mothers at home, women can get on with the business they do so well.
