Landlords' tax bonanza

The popularity of negatively geared rental housing, and its cost to taxpayers, continues to balloon. More than a million Australians claimed they lost money on renting out homes in 2005-06, resulting in a collective tax break to them of $3.5 billion, the Australian Taxation Office has revealed. In the same year, only half a million people reported having made money on renting out property. In most businesses, losing money is frowned on. In this one, however, it has become the spirit of the game, with landlords writing off their claimed losses against tax, and effectively using the savings to subsidise their property investment. On preliminary figures, the Tax Office says landlords reported $8.7 billion of rental losses in the year to June 2006. The final figures, on past practice, are likely to be higher than that — about $9.3 billion. Seven years earlier, 650,000 landlords reported just $2.5 billion in losses. Since then, the losses have more than trebled, mounting by roughly 20% a year, while the number of landlords claiming them has risen 70%, as negative gearing has become an increasingly fashionable way to cut your tax bill. Assuming landlords were facing, on average, a marginal tax rate of 37.5 cents in the dollar, the tax they saved has escalated from about $1 billion seven years ago to $3.5 billion in 2005-06, and probably more like $5 billion a year now given interest rate rises since. full story source : domain.com.au

Cowley's five titanium face plates

FORMER swimmer Simon Cowley will have five titanium plates in his face for the rest of his life after suffering horrific injuries when he was king hit in a Sydney bar last week. Cowley, 27, was discharged from hospital on Monday, three days after a complex series of operations to repair his face.
He is in considerable pain and will have to be fed through a straw for at least the next few weeks.
"He's a bit of a mess at the moment," said Peter Cowley, who is helping care for his son in the family home in Sydney.
"He's had five plates inserted - two each side of his jaw and another one up near the eye socket."
Cowley has been told the plates will be there for the rest of his life.
He suffered fractures to his jaw, eye socket, hard palate, cheekbone and nose. He also had bones broken above the bridge of his nose.
"With his nose they had to straighten it all up and he's got a splint on that," Mr Cowley said.
"But he's in good spirits, which is good.
"He realises it's going to be a long process to recovery and we're just keeping our fingers crossed that everything has gone well and there's no problems," he said.
"The surgeons are very happy with the result. They've been able to repair all the damage and they're reasonably confident."

Car Review

Audi R8 coupe AUDI crashes the supercar party with a two-seater mid-engined sports car so accessible and complete that it evokes memories simultaneously of the Honda NSX, Porsche 911 and Ferrari Dino. The Volkswagen-owned luxury brand has been itching to build a car like this for decades, and even though Italian stablemate Lamborghini’s Gallardo has played a large part in the development of the striking R8, it is still very much an Audi - as well as a hardcore driver’s car, but with a softer, more forgiving side. This is a sensational vehicle.

Chocolate hazelnut meringue stack

Serves 8
INGREDIENTS ½ cup (75g) hazelnuts, toasted 6 egg whites 1 2/3 cups (350g) caster sugar 1½ teaspoons white vinegar ¼ cup cocoa powder
600ml thickened cream 2 punnets fresh raspberries
METHOD Pre heat oven 150°C (130°C fan force).
Process hazelnuts until finely chopped; set aside.
In a large bowl beat egg whites until stiff. Add sugar a little at a time beating until sugar dissolves with each addition; add vinegar with the last of the sugar and beat to combine.
Add 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder and ¾ of the hazelnuts to the meringue and fold through.
Draw around a 22cm round cake tin onto a sheet of baking paper; repeat twice. Grease 3 baking trays and place baking paper, drawn side down, onto each. Split the meringue mixture into 3 and spread onto each baking sheet using the drawn circle as a guide. Sprinkle remaining cocoa and hazelnuts over 1 of the meringues.
Bake in the pre-heated oven for 55-60 minutes or until meringue feels dry to the touch and lifts easily off the baking paper.
Meanwhile in a large bowl whip the cream until stiff.
Remove meringues from oven and cool on a wire rack.
Reserving the cocoa and nut dusted meringue for the top, spread half the cream over 1 of the other meringues and top with half the raspberries; place remaining meringue on top, spread with remaining cream and raspberries. Finally top with reserved cocoa and nut meringue.
Assemble at the last minute as the cream will soften the meringue too much.

This Edition's Horoscope

This edition's Horoscope "Aries " The months ahead are likely to start with fresh starts and clean slates. A chance to clear the air over a certain matter should put your friendship on a new and better level. Watch the spending in June; a great offer or bargain might not be half as brilliant as you first thought. The end of August is likely to bring a fabulous opportunity for travel, but perhaps it won’t be quite the five-star experience that you would expect. October is likely to be a very quiet month, while November looks rather hectic on the work or school front. However, Christmas will see you getting a little stressed, as you make a real effort to impress someone; you can afford to play it cool! The opportunity to really dazzle someone will come at the end of January!

Speeding ticket drives man round bend

NO one likes getting a speeding ticket in the post. But when South Australian police sent one half way around the world to David Smart in northern England, the 65-year-old former surveyor was flabbergasted. Mr Smart was fined $196 for driving 8km/hr over the speed limit in the Adelaide Hills, despite the fact he has never been to Australia. Adding to the mystery are claims by the police that the woman who owned the car allegedly involved signed a statutory declaration claiming Mr Smart had been behind the wheel. "I've never been to Australia, which is a wonderful country I'm sure, and I would love to go there one day," Mr Smart said from his home in Scunthorpe. "And I've never had a ticket in my life, I'm pleased to say. "The woman is obviously mistaken and where she got my name and address from I have no idea." After consulting with local police in his home town of Scunthorpe, Mr Smart was advised not to pay the fine, which originally arrived in his letterbox last December. However since then he has received a stern reminder from South Australian police, ordering him to pay up or risk being issued an even heftier fine. The fine states that the car was caught speeding at 68km/h in a 60km/h zone on Adelaide Rd, Littlehampton, at 9am on December 14, 2007. "The owner of this vehicle, Fluin, Kathryn Julia, has affirmed in a statutory declaration that you were the driver of the vehicle at the time of the alleged offence," the fine said. Mr Smart said he has never heard of the woman and has no intention of paying the fine. "I went to my local police station and they advised me against payment because I haven't been there," he said. "I think if I get caught for speeding I'll have to give them Kathryn Fluin's name. "And if the Australian police need a description of me, I look like (Neighbours character) Harold Bishop with a little moustache." source: news.com.au
